Astro Camp ( science field trip )
Posted by: Mrs Barber
I wanted to post about a neat little thing My girls got to participate in this year. Its called Astro Camp. Each year they learn something different then the year before. This year, and this set of classes they learned about light, and Rocks. (2 separate classes)
These classes are up in Ogden, and they have schools (and home schoolers) set up field trips. But it can be hard to get into because its very popular.

First off they started in a class that taught about rocks. Different ways rocks are formed, from sediment on the bottom of lakes, to volcano’s awesome eruptions.
They keep the classes small enough for each of them to get a very close up and personal experience, which I just LOVE!

They got to go up in small groups after the Rock lessons and try to sort a few dozen different rocks into 3 categories according to what they had been taught on how to recognize different rocks by how they were formed

(this was a good refresher coarse for me on all the things I’d forgotten, it was just as much fun for me as a teacher to be a part of it as well)

Then they went to the class where the instructor taught about light.
This was very neat, and a lot of fun!

He went over things like: the colors in light, and how the eye see’s it, mirrors (and fun with mirrors) holograms, and much more!

The teacher had this circular thing (thats the technical term) that he said he had “the worlds smallest pig”, and he offered to let the kids come up and see the pig and pet it. (sitting in the chairs, you cant see it, but apparently up close you can)
Savannah was picked first to go see it.

She was really tickled pink about it!
After every kid, one by one, got to go up and see the “pig” he then took the top off of the circular thing and walked around to show how it was projecting a hologram above the object.

It was a neat thing to be a part of!
I wouldn’t be able to put half the stuff they talked about in this blog, but they did some neat things! Like, they made a simple version of a kaleidoscope, and they tried drawing inside lines on a paper while looking in a mirror, that was Funny!

So if you ever have kids in a situation to get to try that out, DO IT! Its Neato!
